An absolutely calibrated survey of polarized emission from the northern sky at 1.4 GHz

چکیده
A new polarization survey of the northern sky at 1.41 GHz is presented. The observations were carried out using the 25.6 m telescope at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory in Canada, with an angular resolution of 36. The data are corrected for ground radiation to obtain Stokes U and Q maps on a well-established intensity scale tied to absolute determinations of zero levels, containing emission structures of large angular extent, with an rms noise of 12 mK. Survey observations were carried out by drift scanning the sky between −29 and +90 declination. The fully sampled drift scans, observed in steps of 0.25 to ∼ 2.5 in declination, result in a northern sky coverage of 41.7% of full Nyquist sampling. The survey surpasses by a factor of 200 the coverage, and by a factor of 5 the sensitivity, of the Leiden/Dwingeloo polarization survey (Spoelstra 1972) that was until now the most complete large-scale survey. The temperature scale is tied to the Effelsberg scale. Absolute zero-temperature levels are taken from the Leiden/Dwingeloo survey after rescaling those data by the factor of 0.94 . The paper describes the observations, data processing, and calibration steps. The data are publicly available at http://www.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de/div/konti/26msurvey or http://www.drao.nrc.ca/26msurvey.

The DRAO 26 - m Large Scale Polarization Survey at 1 . 41 GHz
The Effelsberg telescope as well as the DRAO synthesis telescope are currently surveying the Galactic polarized emission at λ 21 cm in detail. These new surveys reveal an unexpected richness of small-scale structures in the polarized sky. However, observations made with synthesis or single-dish telescopes are not on absolute intensity scales and therefore lack information about the large-scale ...
متن کاملAbsolutely calibrated radio polarimetry of the inner Galaxy at 2.3 GHz and 4.8 GHz
We present high sensitivity and absolutely calibrated images of diffuse radio polarisation at a resolution of about 10 covering the range 10 < l < 34 and |b| < 5 at 2.3 GHz from the S-band Parkes All Sky Survey and at 4.8 GHz from the SinoGerman λ6 cm polarisation survey of the Galactic plane. Strong depolarisation near the Galactic plane is seen at 2.3 GHz, which correlates with strong Hα emis...
متن کاملARCADE 2 Observations of Galactic Radio Emission
We use absolutely calibrated data from the ARCADE 2 flight in 2006 July to model Galactic emission at frequencies 3, 8, and 10 GHz. The spatial structure in the data is consistent with a superposition of free–free and synchrotron emission. Emission with spatial morphology traced by the Haslam 408 MHz survey has spectral index βsynch = −2.5± 0.1, with free–free emission contributing 0.10± 0.01 o...
متن کاملNew shell radio supernova remnant G 16 . 2 − 2 . 7
The extended radio source G16.2−2.7 is detected as a new previously uncataloged Galactic supernova remnant. Its non-thermal radio spectrum has spectral index α = −0.51, with Sν(1GHz) = 2.08 Jy, as being measured with the RATAN-600 radio telescope. The NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) map at 1.4 GHz shows a shelllike bilateral structure. The similar smoothed image from the Effelsberg survey at 2.7 GHz...
متن کاملCircularly Polarized Circular Slot Antenna Array Using Sequentially Rotated Feed Network
This paper presents the design, simulation, and measurement of two low-cost broadband circularly polarized (CP) printed antennas: a single element and an array at C band. The proposed single element antenna is excited by an L-shaped strip with a tapered end, located along the circular-slot diagonal line in the back plane. From the array experimental results, the 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth can r...
